The oldest and most common type of story is a love story. You’d be hard-pressed to find a story that doesn’t have a romantic element in it. That’s because love stories are great. Falling in love is one of the most memorable and best times in a person’s life. It is also something that mostly everyone can relate to. Whether it be your first love in high school, the beautiful wedding day you’ll never forget or your first crush, love is a universal experience that everybody has. Not only that, there is something great and beautiful about watching someone else fall in love. When it’s captured right, there are few things more entertaining than a love story.

When you think about some of the greatest love stories in movies, we tend to jump right to the dramatic and intense ones. We often forget about the fantastic romances that are in romantic comedies. “Rom Coms” get a bad wrap of simply being movies for women or date night. In reality some great films have been romantic comedies and some of the best films ever would fall into that category. Good romantic comedies are able to capture the balance of a beautiful love story and comedy. They embrace the humor that can be found in dating and falling in love. That humor is the perfect match for a good romance to make for a wonderfully entertaining experience.

Since the turn of the century there have been some great romantic comedies. There was a run of truly great ones early on and even though the frequency has recently died down, the quality has gone up. Some of the best films of the past few years have been romantic comedies. This success will hopefully bring back more films from this great genre.

To celebrate this genre that I really enjoy, I’ve put together my 10 favorite romantic comedies since 2000. The only rule for the list is that every film had to feature the love story. It can’t just be an element of the film; it has to be the main focus of the film.

  1. The Wedding Planner (2001)

This makes the list more for nostalgia than anything else, I saw this movie when I was younger and had a lot of fun with it. All the elements for a good romantic comedy are there, good supporting characters, interesting set up and a few twists. What really makes this movie memorable and great is the chemistry between Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey. They are a lot of fun throughout this whole thing and while the script may not be great, they are and that is enough in this case.

  1. 50 First Dates (2004)

This movie has a bunch of elements that I don’t normally like. Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore being the biggest of those elements, however this movie works for me. The ridiculous premise works very well and provides plenty of fun moments. Adam Sandler was fun and charming, and Drew Barrymore was great alongside him. This is a movie that I can watch over and over and will still laugh and have fun.

  1. Knocked Up (2007)

I watched this for the first time recently and was blown away by a couple of things, mainly Seth Rogan and his chemistry with Katherine Heigl. These doesn’t seem like it would work but it ends up working great. Another part that makes this incredible is the supporting cast. There are so many funny people in this movie and that rounds out the experience for me. I laughed all the way through and had a blast with Knocked Up.

  1. Maid in Manhattan (2002)

Jennifer Lopez had a great run in the early 2000s and I was there for pretty much all of it. This movie was probably my favorite of them all. My love for this movie is simple, Jennifer Lopez is great and the movie is a lot of fun. This is another one that I watched a lot when I was younger and it never stopped being fun.

  1. Hitch (2005)

What is there not to like about this movie? Will Smith is great. Kevin James is great (easily my favorite movie of his). Eva Mendes is great. It’s hilarious and endlessly quotable. It’s a great mixture of fun and sweet that never gets old.

  1. Crazy Rich Asians (2018)

Recency bias may be why it’s so high on the list but there is no doubt that it belongs on every list about romantic comedies. This is a great film. It is beautifully shot, well written and wonderfully acted. It’s funny, dramatic and sweet. There are memorable and relatable characters, and probably the best wedding scene ever in a romantic comedy.

  1. Trainwreck (2015)

Of all the romantic comedies on the list, this might be the funniest. Amy Schumer kills in this movie both as a writer and a lead. It also gave us Bill Hader as a leading man and we don’t get nearly enough of that. He was great and their chemistry was perfect. The love story in this is just as beautiful as the movie is funny.

  1. Adventureland (2009)

Some of these movies are what I loved about movies when I was younger; this movie is everything I love about movies now. The writing is outstanding in this movie. It is clever, funny and perfectly captures an awkward crush that turns into an awkward summer love. Jesse Eisenberg is a very good leading man and Kristen Stewart is fantastic. Their chemistry works in the awkward way that it needed to. Adventureland is different than most other films in the genre and I love that about it.

  1. Brown Sugar (2002)

This was my favorite movie growing up. I’ve watched this more times than I can count and I find something new to love about it every time. This movie felt like it was made for me because it was about hip-hop (which I’ve always loved) and about people involved in hip-hop the way that I always wanted to be. It expressed my love for the genre and gave me characters that I could really connect and relate to. Also it’s a damn good love story.

  1. The Big Sick (2017)

This movie has everything that I like about the genre. The story is original and a fresh take on the genre. The writing is very good and the love story is captivating. It is hilarious from start to finish and that makes it a very easy rewatch. It’s a well-rounded film that touches so many different emotions and feelings.

  1. Ah man! I thought Hitch would’ve been higher. That’s definitely my favorite, but the Big Sick has everything you want in a romantic comedy and Brown Sugar is that joint! One movie that I thought for sure would be on here is The Proposal. Good list!

  2. Definitely just added some movies to my watchlist! I agree with anything Jennifer Lopez does. I would also say The Proposal like Brock is one that I loved. Great top 10 Aubrey!
